Ou'rouba - Silwan Women Action Group
Women are present and have been active in critical ways all along the struggle to gain liberation and equality, but their work and faces are often invisible. Nevertheless, women have been vital to creating change, and the conditions for a strengthened civil society.
Ou'rouba is a coalition that the women of Silwan have created in effort to revive the female alliance that in the past has been a vital part of the communal life in the village. The women of Ou'rouba come together in weekly meetings, and organize workshops and discussions about women and their society. Integral part of their efforts is to find productive ways to deal with the problems that the political reality has imposed upon their lives.
Projects and Workshops
Embroidery and Sewing
Since 2008 the women of Silwan have been working together to create a collection of traditional Palestinian embroidery items, which they present and sell during events, special occasions and bazars organized by Madaa and other organizations.
In addition, a course for learning how to sew started in Silwan in December 2009, and runs throughout the year, including the summer. In the sewing course the women also learn how to promote their products, increase their income, and make productive use of their time. During the course they also sew school uniforms and sell them in low prices to poor families who cannot afford them in their original price. The sewing equipment, materials and machines are supported by DED.

A trip to Manda Village - The women of Silwan were invited to Manda Village on 23 March, 2010 by the Galilee Arabic Women Association in order to teach them how to work with straws for weaving. The women in Manda Village showed women of Silwan how they make by hand products from straw such as: baskets, boxes, and straw platters. This trip encouraged the women of Silwan to communicate with other Arab women, and take a look at what other women do to make profit and creatively and productively use their time.
