History and Archaeology
The city of Jerusalem started as a small village 5000 years ago in the place where Wadi Hilwe neighborhood in Silwan is situated today. From the very first inhabitants and up until today, there has been a continual presence almost with no gaps. The archaeological and historical research in Silwan has revealed dozens of strata that tell the stories of many different nations and cultures. The abundance of known cultures from the past such as Canaanites, Judeans, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims and others have created a succession of fascinating and unique archaeological strata that almost cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
