Madaa Creative Center - Silwan organized several activities on the occasion of the Palestinian Prisoners' Day in its three branches (the main branch Wadi Hilweh, Ein Al Loza Branch and Batn Al Hawa Branch), dozens of children participated in the event.
Coordinator of Madaa’s main branch in Wadi Hilweh, Hanadi Abbasi, said: “The day of the Palestinian prisoner is a day of solidarity with the prisoners and depriving them of the right to freedom in their land, for this reason, Madaa Creative Center Wadi Hilweh branch organized some activities on this occasion to remind the children of the Palestinian prisoners and to strengthen their sense of belonging and patriotism. Therefore, we started the activities with a brief yet illustrative statement about the conditions of the prisoners in the occupation prisons and their suffering and the torture and insults they face.”
Abbasi added: “We have presented a film about the prisoners of the town of Silwan, which included scenes of the brutality of the occupation on the Palestinian prisoner beginning from their arrest from their homes to jails. There was footage of the occupation detaining them, humiliating them and beating them, as well as imposing house arrest on them, also known as administrative detention or imprisonment in their homes. The children talked about their relatives who were imprisoned, and then they wrote names of some of the prisoners they know or have heard of, and drew some expressive images that reflect the prisoners in jail and what imprisonment means from the point of view of the children. We talked about the severity of the suffering of the prisoners and the negligence of their rights, forcing the prisoners to strike to gain some of their rights.”
In Ein Al Loza Branch, coordinator Abeer Al Abbasi said: “The staff explained to the children about the conditions of the prisoners in the occupation prisons, and explained to them about the Palestinian Prisoner Day, which is a day of solidarity with the prisoners to make them feel that they are always present in our conscience. The children then made a mural on Prisoner's Day and each child wrote messages addressed to the prisoners wishing them a speedy release. Finally, the children hung a large sign in the center, with the names of the prisoners of Silwan town on it.”
In Batn Al Hawa Branch, Coordinator Nemati Sanad said: “We talked with the participants about the Prisoner's Day and what this title means, and when the Palestinians started to commemorate this occasion. We spoke to them about the suffering of the prisoners from the moment of their arrest until their judgment and imprisonment, and the suffering of their parents. We also talked about the issue of the suffering of the people of Silwan from raids and arrests, specifically in Batn Al-Hawa district. We mentioned to the children the statistics of the detainees, young men, mothers, girls, children and patients, and we presented a play that characterizes the Palestinian reality throughout the arrest of the detainees and taking them to courts, and their perseverance during the stages of detention.”
