Current Situation
As part of East Jerusalem, Silwan is heavily underfinanced. The infrastructure is old and hazardous, which many times lead to shortages in water and electricity. Many roads lack sidewalks, and contain dangerous potholes. There are no green parks, recreation grounds, sport halls, or municipal extracurricular activities or community centers. The education system heavily suffers from lack of classrooms and facilities, underpayment of teachers and schools in terrible conditions.
It is estimated that above 50% of the population is under 18, and that 75% of the children live under the poverty line.
